BC Place Renaming Blunder Cost Taxpayers $263,000

Author: Jordan Bateman 2012/06/18

BC Place StadiumThe BC Place Stadium renaming debacle found a new chapter on the weekend, when NDP MLA Spencer Chandra Herbert released a letter from Tourism Minister Pat Bell outlining the costs incurred by taxpayers before the B.C. Government nixed the $40 million, 20-year deal with Telus.

You’ll recall the CTF was highly critical of government’s decision to forgo the $40 million, which would have helped reduce the strain on taxpayers.

Now it’s become clear that taxpayers didn’t just lose a future revenue stream, we spent $263,000 to get to the point where government changed its mind.

This is a kick in the teeth to taxpayers already reeling from the punch in the gut of 40 million lost dollars.

If government wasn’t serious about selling the naming rights, they should have never started the process and spent $263,000 to get to saying no.
